AI search readiness: what small shops should check first

Before buying an AI visibility service, fix the product information a customer needs. Start with one valuable page, close the gaps and ask what any readiness score actually measures.

Fix the product information a customer needs before buying an AI visibility service. Start with one page that matters to sales: make the offer clear, explain who it’s for and back up the claims. That’s useful work you can check.

In this guide

Our recommendation is to start there. You can find and correct a missing specification today, even if you can’t establish how often an AI assistant recommends your business.

Google says its existing SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Those features require no special optimisation, AI text file or special schema. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to qualify as a supporting link; meeting those requirements doesn’t guarantee inclusion. Google’s AI features guidance.

That guidance covers Google. For claims about other platforms, ask for evidence from the platform being discussed. An answer about one service shouldn’t quietly become a promise about all of them.

Start with a page that matters commercially

Choose a product or category you want a new customer to find. The homepage can look perfectly respectable while the details that decide a purchase are missing three clicks further in.

Read the page as someone who doesn’t already know the product. A spare filter needs to say which equipment it fits. “Professional quality” is doing a lot of work for two words. It still hasn’t told the buyer which machine the filter fits.

Write down the buying information that exists only in your head, a supplier email or an elusive PDF. Put the essential facts where the customer needs them, with a clear link to supporting detail.

Check access and discovery

Use Search Console’s indexing reports and URL Inspection to check the selected page. Then follow the route from your shop’s navigation. Finding a product instantly in the admin system tells you very little about how easily a new customer can reach it. Google’s Search Console guidance.

Make the route and the page useful. Google’s starter guide stresses helpful content and helping people discover it. A published URL alone doesn’t establish that the right people can find it. SEO starter guide.

Give yourself an evidence list

Use the table below to record what is present and what needs fixing. It gives each decision a reason. An unexplained score out of 100 doesn’t.

QuestionWhat to record
Is the offer specific? The exact sentence explaining the product or category.
Can someone establish whether it fits their need?Relevant compatibility, application, size or other buying information.
Are important claims supported?A specification, suitable source or clearly described evidence.
Are buying uncertainties answered? The applicable price, availability, delivery or enquiry information.
Is the information consistent?Any difference between the page, specification and other public product information.
Is the next step usable?Where the visitor goes to choose, buy or ask a necessary question.

Mark each answer clear, incomplete or unverified. Add the page address and a specific fix: for example, “add the three compatible model numbers beside the filter description”. This is a work list. It doesn’t calculate the likelihood of appearing in an AI answer.

Keep readiness and visibility separate

A clearer page is a useful improvement. To claim better AI visibility, you need separate evidence that the business or page appeared in relevant answers.

Before paying for a visibility report, ask what was observed: the platform, the question, the date, the relevant location or account context, and whether the answer linked to your page. Ask what was measured before being impressed by the decimal places.

Keep a record of your page changes and watch for useful outcomes: relevant search visits, fewer unresolved buying questions and completed enquiries or purchases. A change after an edit doesn’t, on its own, establish that the edit caused it.

Choose one commercially important page today. Fix the information gap most likely to hold up a buying decision, check the revised page and record what changed. Then work through the next page. You’ll have a repeatable way to improve the shop, with evidence for every fix.
